Coaching Research

Joy has co-authored highly rated research into how coaching leaders can also result in changes happening within their teams . See the article published in the academic journal Management Learning.

At the bottom of this page is a summary of her research findings on the individual and organisational benefits of coaching.

Individual benefits

  • Focus: by providing clarity in setting short and long term goals.
  • Support: by allowing time to reflect and think strategically.
  • Increased self-awareness: by opening up your personal awareness and understanding of your interaction with others.
  • Creative thinking: by stimulating new ways of thinking flexibly and innovatively.
  • Motivation: by increasing determination so you take successful action quicker.
  • Achievement of goals: by supporting how you go about achieving those goals.

Organisational Benefits

  • Individual change: Because the leaders being coached (the coachees) are in control of their own learning, their motivation and focus increases. As a result, they are more effective in reaching organisational goals quicker.
  • Team change: Following coaching, leaders demonstrate new behaviours to their team. They also introduce new procedures to embed team changes. These role-modelled approaches are then copied by other members of the team, maximising team performance.
  • Cultural change: Coaching a critical mass of senior members within an organisation helps create a coaching culture in which people are more focused, open and willing to change and learn.
